Secure your Documents and Valuables
Ensure that you keep your original passport, birth certificate and other important documents in a safe place in your dorm or apartment. You may need a copy of one or more of these documents when you sign up for mobile service, apply for a credit card or purchase airline tickets.
Safeguard your electronic devices by using a laptop lock and purchasing insurance and/or extended warranties. Also, leverage cloud-based storage to keep scanned copies of your important documents, store your academic work and back-up your hard drive.
Friends and Family network
It’s reassuring when you have trusted friends and family in the US, on whom you can rely to provide support to your child. Having said that, practical considerations can make those plans unrealistic. America is a huge country; based on where friends and family live, the student may have to drive considerable distances or take flights to get around. UCLA, for example, is 600 kilometers from San Francisco, making it very difficult for a student to visit an uncle in San Francisco every weekend. So, in the absence of a family or friends nearby, ensure that your student is aware of how to manage his or her own life independently.
